History
Yelapa's history is deeply intertwined with its geographic isolation, nestled in a cove only accessible by boat until very recently. For centuries, it was a tranquil fishing village, largely disconnected from the rapid development seen in other parts of Mexico. The indigenous Tuito culture, ancestors of the current inhabitants, originally settled in Yelapa, living off the land and sea. Over time, the area caught the attention of pirates and adventurers who sought refuge in its secluded bay. In the 20th century, Yelapa became a hidden gem for artists, hippies, and celebrities drawn by its pristine natural beauty and serene environment, away from the commercialization affecting much of the Mexican coastline. This blend of indigenous heritage and a legacy of secluded tranquility continues to define Yelapa, preserving its charm as a remote paradise even in modern times.
